Christopher Nolan made the world sit up and pay attention to him by crafting (with his brother Jonah) a revenge-fuelled crime thriller. Dared to demand that its audience sit up and pay attention to its every last detail.

It’s precision-engineered: apart from the carefully inserted Sammy Jankis subplot. Every scene lasts as long as the span of damaged protagonist Leonard Shelby’s short-term memory, as well as running in reverse order. And. It. Works.
